Background of the Study
Party primaries are critical mechanisms within political parties for selecting candidates to contest elections. In Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, the process of conducting party primaries plays a pivotal role in determining the quality of local governance. Effective primaries can enhance democratic accountability by ensuring that only competent and popular candidates emerge, thereby fostering good governance. However, irregularities and internal party conflicts during the primary process can undermine its credibility and lead to the selection of candidates based on patronage rather than merit (Ade, 2023). Recent research has indicated that transparent and competitive primary processes contribute significantly to improved policy implementation and citizen satisfaction (Okafor, 2024). Nonetheless, issues such as undue influence by party elites and manipulation of the primary process continue to challenge the integrity of local politics (Chukwu, 2025). This study examines the impact of party primaries on the overall quality of local governance in Afikpo North, exploring how the internal dynamics of political parties influence candidate selection and subsequent administrative performance.
Statement of the Problem
In Afikpo North, the conduct of party primaries has raised concerns about the integrity of candidate selection processes. Irregularities, including undue influence and internal conflicts, have resulted in the election of candidates who may not be best suited for effective governance. This undermines the quality of local governance and limits accountability. The study seeks to analyze these challenges and assess their implications for local administrative performance and democratic processes (Ade, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of party primaries on local governance quality in Afikpo North. The findings will inform political parties and policymakers about necessary reforms to ensure transparent and merit-based candidate selection, thereby improving local governance and democratic accountability (Ade, 2023; Chukwu, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of party primaries on local governance quality in Afikpo North Local Government Area, focusing on internal party processes and their outcomes.
